Johann Sebastian Bach – Doppelkonzert d-moll

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750)

Double Concerto in D minor

Carlo Balmelli – Transcription for 2 Soprano Saxophone / Woodwind Ensemble

Duration ca. 11'
Difficulty 4.5
Item No.   SWB62

The double concerto for two violins, strings and continuo in D minor occupies a special place among all of Bach’s solo concerts, above all because, in addition to Bach’s usual counterpoint, it also impresses with dramatic highlights. Bach himself edited this concerto for two harpsichords, strings and continuo in C minor. Based on the autographs of the solo voices, it is guessed that Bach had already written the first versions of the concert in his time in Koethen – at least as a trio sonata and later in his time in Leipzig as a concerto. In the present transcription by Carlo Balmelli, two soprano saxophones are used as solo instruments, accompanied by a woodwind ensemble.
